Supernatural covers 120 of the 800 titles in the answer
pool — roughly one in seven. And in our
genre difficulty measurement it came out
first out of 17 genres as the easiest. Yet supernatural answers are the
ones that drag on. This page re-measures all 120 titles to explain
why the "easy" verdict doesn't match what happens in play.
The short version: supernatural is the exact mirror image of the sports genre. Sports is the genre where scores refuse to rise. Supernatural is the genre where everything rises. Both are hard, for opposite reasons, and they need opposite tactics.
1. Supernatural is a genre with its whole scale pushed upward
For each genre we measured the average similarity among titles sharing the tag (inside) and between those titles and everything else (outside). All 16 genres with at least 10 titles are shown, and franchise pairs (sequels, films) are excluded throughout. Sorted by outside, highest first.
| Genre | Titles | Inside | Outside | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ecchi | 12 | 0.527 | 0.523 | +0.004 |
| Supernatural | 120 | 0.619 | 0.519 | +0.100 |
| Slice of Life | 45 | 0.597 | 0.510 | +0.087 |
| Suspense | 72 | 0.534 | 0.501 | +0.032 |
| Mystery | 122 | 0.554 | 0.500 | +0.054 |
| Romance | 132 | 0.588 | 0.499 | +0.089 |
| Drama | 270 | 0.515 | 0.494 | +0.021 |
| Fantasy | 186 | 0.543 | 0.494 | +0.049 |
| Horror | 15 | 0.602 | 0.493 | +0.110 |
| Adventure | 193 | 0.532 | 0.491 | +0.041 |
| Comedy | 205 | 0.523 | 0.487 | +0.036 |
| Award Winning | 69 | 0.537 | 0.485 | +0.052 |
| Action | 295 | 0.505 | 0.482 | +0.023 |
| Boys Love | 10 | 0.598 | 0.482 | +0.116 |
| Sci-Fi | 126 | 0.530 | 0.480 | +0.050 |
| Sports | 62 | 0.512 | 0.383 | +0.129 |
Supernatural has the highest inside value of all 16 genres at 0.619 — supernatural titles really are closest to each other. But look at the next column: outside 0.519. Supernatural titles are also closer to non-supernatural titles than any other genre is. That's 0.136 above sports at the bottom of the table.
※ On outside alone, Ecchi (0.523) edges past supernatural, but it's a 12-title group and the value is unstable. Among genres with 100+ titles, supernatural is first on both inside and outside, and that is the only sense in which this page claims "first."
So against a supernatural answer, almost anything you type scores something. The +0.100 gap is larger than romance's (+0.089), but it sits on top of a floor that is already at 0.519.
2. Which is why 0.70 fails to narrow anything
This is the heart of the genre. For an answer in a given genre, we counted how many other titles clear 0.65 against it — counted per title, then taken as the median (franchises excluded, anime only).
| Answer's genre | Titles | 0.65+ | 0.70+ | 0.75+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supernatural | 120 | 92 | 27 | 6 |
| Romance | 132 | 61 | 17 | 2 |
| Fantasy | 186 | 35 | 8 | 0 |
| Comedy | 205 | 35 | 5 | 0 |
| Drama | 270 | 33 | 6 | 0 |
| Mystery | 122 | 32 | 5 | 0 |
| Adventure | 193 | 31 | 6 | 1 |
| Action | 295 | 22 | 3 | 0 |
| Sci-Fi | 126 | 16 | 3 | 0 |
| Sports | 62 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
A supernatural answer has 92 wrong answers above 0.65. For action it's 22; for sports it's 2. Raise the bar to 0.70 and 27 still remain — where every other large genre sits at 3 to 8.
In supernatural, 0.70 isn't a lock. It's a shortlist of 27.
In sports 0.65 is close to the best you'll ever see, so you have to trust it. In supernatural 0.70 is commonplace, so you must not. The same number means opposite things depending on the genre.
The isolation figure — median 0.781, first among 17 genres — is the same phenomenon wearing a different face. Supernatural titles sit close to their neighbour, but the neighbour isn't one title, it's twenty-seven. Isolation only looks at the single nearest title, so it can't see the crowd behind it.
3. It points the way, but it never confirms
Of the 120 supernatural titles, 87 (72%) have a nearest non-franchise neighbour that is also supernatural. Random chance would give 15%.
| Metric | Supernatural | Sports | Romance | Fantasy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nearest neighbour shares genre | 72% | 82% | 71% | 75% |
| Random expectation | 15% | 8% | 16% | 23% |
| Ratio | 4.8× | 10.3× | 4.4× | 3.3× |
4.8× beats romance and fantasy and is less than half of sports. If you've picked up a supernatural signal, the direction is probably right — but as section 2 showed, far too many candidates survive inside that direction. In this genre the game is not finding the direction, it's splitting it.
4. Supernatural never stands alone
One measurement explains why the outside is so close: supernatural is almost always bolted onto another genre.
| Genre | Titles | Avg. tags | Tag-alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery | 122 | 3.48 | 1.6% |
| Fantasy | 186 | 3.20 | 3.2% |
| Supernatural | 120 | 3.00 | 0.8% |
| Action | 295 | 2.85 | 7.1% |
| Whole pool | 800 | 2.43 | 21.1% |
| Sports | 62 | 1.39 | 71.0% |
Exactly one of the 120 supernatural titles (0.8%) carries
Supernatural as its only genre tag. Against 21.1% for the pool and 71.0% for
sports, that is effectively none. The tags it rides with are spread wide:
Action 38% · Mystery 35% · Drama 23% ·
Comedy 22% · Romance 21% · Adventure 18%.
The practical consequence is direct. Knowing "it's supernatural" barely shrinks the field. A supernatural title is also an action title, a mystery, a romance — so guesses from those genres ride up with it.
※ Splitting supernatural by tag count, the 2-tag group (34 titles) has a median nearest neighbour of 0.792 while the 4+ group (27 titles) sits at 0.768, so more tags is slightly worse here (non-supernatural average also falls, 0.527 → 0.515). That's the opposite of the direction sports showed, but the groups are uneven and the gap is small, so this page did not establish a cause. These are correlations, not experiments, and the tag strings themselves feed the similarity computation (70% structured text + 30% synopsis).
5. Supernatural splits into two neighbourhoods
So what splits those 27 candidates? The genre it's bolted to. We divided the 120 titles by co-tag and measured every pairing between the resulting groups.
| Group | Titles | Within group | Median nearest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supernatural + Slice of Life | 21 | 0.696 | 0.780 |
| Supernatural + Award Winning | 10 | 0.645 | 0.775 |
| Supernatural + Comedy | 26 | 0.632 | 0.796 |
| Supernatural + Action | 46 | 0.626 | 0.780 |
| Supernatural + Romance | 25 | 0.625 | 0.781 |
| Supernatural + Mystery | 42 | 0.623 | 0.776 |
| Supernatural + Adventure | 22 | 0.609 | 0.771 |
| Supernatural + Drama | 28 | 0.601 | 0.768 |
Crossing the groups against each other shows which ones are strangers.
| Group pair | Average | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Action group ↔ Romance group | 0.585 | strangers |
| Action group ↔ Drama group | 0.589 | strangers |
| Mystery group ↔ Romance group | 0.591 | strangers |
| Romance group ↔ Drama group | 0.612 | same neighbourhood |
| Action group ↔ Mystery group | 0.618 | same neighbourhood |
| Romance group ↔ Slice of Life group | 0.639 | same neighbourhood |
| Slice of Life group, within | 0.696 | tightest |
※ The groups overlap — one title can carry both Action and
Mystery. Values are "group A's titles looking at group B", so direction
shifts them by under 0.01: Action→Romance is 0.585, Romance→Action is 0.593. The table
lists the lower figure.
Supernatural splits broadly into a battle side (Action · Mystery · Adventure) and an emotional side (Romance · Drama · Slice of Life). Across the divide the average is 0.585–0.594; inside either side it's 0.62–0.70. That 0.03–0.10 is the only lever this genre gives you for cutting the field in half.
The furthest pairs make the split obvious. Both tagged supernatural, «Hellsing Ultimate» and «Seishun Buta Yarou wa Santa Claus no Yume wo Minai» sit at 0.217, and «Steel Ball Run: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken» and «Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai» at 0.222 — as wide as the furthest romance pair (0.201) or sports pair (0.203).
6. Five anchors, five different pictures
Take the highest-rated supernatural titles and look at their top 10 neighbours (franchises excluded). The picture changes completely from group to group.
| Anchor | Nearest | Supernatural in top 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Owarimonogatari 2nd Season | 0.796 | 8 |
| Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd Season | 0.774 | 3 |
| Mob Psycho 100 II | 0.712 | 4 |
| Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen - Kashin-tan | 0.676 | 6 |
| Fruits Basket: The Final | 0.674 | 7 |
| Steel Ball Run: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken | 0.651 | 0 |
Same genre, and the nearest neighbour ranges from 0.651 to 0.796, with anywhere from 0 to 8 supernatural titles in the top 10. There is no single baseline that reads this genre.
«Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd Season» has only 3, and the rest of its top 10 is filled by
Fantasy titles like the «Mushoku Tensei» series and
«Luo Xiaohei Zhanji 2» at around 0.77. Its themes are Historical and
Iyashikei, so the model locked onto the texture of a quiet
journey before it looked at genre at all.
«Steel Ball Run: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken» has zero, and its top 10
is filled by sports titles such as the Umamusume series. The cause is its
Racing theme, and the full breakdown lives in section 6 of the
sports genre guide. The lesson to carry over here —
even a title with four tags can be grabbed by its single narrowest axis,
and with an average of 3 tags, supernatural hits this constantly.
7. Characters still work, but they gain you less
Typing a character instead of their show scores higher. The margin is just smaller than it is in sports.
| Title | Top character | Char. | Nearest title | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Owarimonogatari 2nd Season | Araragi, Koyomi | 0.886 | 0.796 | +0.090 |
| Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd Season | Ginko | 0.885 | 0.774 | +0.111 |
| Fruits Basket: The Final | Souma, Yuki | 0.811 | 0.674 | +0.137 |
| Mob Psycho 100 II | Ekubo | 0.781 | 0.712 | +0.069 |
| Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen - Kashin-tan | Kurosaki, Ichigo | 0.858 | 0.676 | +0.182 |
The gain runs +0.07 to +0.18, narrower than the +0.11 to +0.21 the same measurement gave in sports — for a simple reason: supernatural titles already score high, so there's less headroom left for a character to add. On the battle side it still stretches to +0.18, as «Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen - Kashin-tan» shows.
※ Characters outscoring their show's nearest title holds across the whole pool (780 of 794, 98%), and the lead character isn't always the highest — in the table above, «Mob Psycho 100 II» peaks on «Ekubo», not on its protagonist. Full data in when to guess a character.
8. Playbook
Step 1. Decent scores everywhere but no finish? Suspect supernatural. Against a supernatural answer, anything you type averages 0.519. In another genre the same guesses land at 0.48–0.51; in sports they're crushed to 0.383. A day where 0.6-something comes easily but nothing breaks 0.8 is the classic supernatural shape.
Step 2. Don't treat 0.70 as confirmation. A supernatural answer has a median of 27 wrong titles above 0.70, where other large genres have 3 to 8. The confirmation line in this genre is above 0.80; 0.70–0.78 is a candidate list, nothing more.
Step 3. Split battle from emotional first. The battle side (action, mystery) and the emotional side (romance, drama, slice of life) sit at 0.585–0.594 across the divide and 0.62–0.70 within it. Type one flagship from each side and see which one comes back 0.03 higher — that alone halves the field.
Step 4. Once you have a side, split again on theme. The themes
supernatural rides with are Mythology 25% · Historical 21% ·
Iyashikei 15% · School 14% · Vampire 10%. Folklore
and spirits are a different neighbourhood from school psychics, same genre or not. Full
theme-axis data is in the axis sharper than genre.
Step 5. Under five candidates, finish with a character. When titles stall around 0.75, their characters reach 0.88. Supernatural gains less from characters than sports does, but it's also the genre that most needs a second way to confirm, because so many candidates survive.

The romance genre guide and isekai & fantasy genre guide give full-pool data on two more axes, and the main strategy guide has the similarity band reference table and a worked example. Pairs that share no tags yet score close are covered in when similarity betrays you.
Measurement basis — 800-title answer pool, collected 2026-08-05. Similarity is cosine similarity over embeddings of each title's description text, and same-franchise pairs (sequels, films) are excluded from every aggregate. "Outside" is the arithmetic mean against all non-franchise titles; "nearest" is the highest non-franchise similarity. The "0.65+" counts in section 2 are per-title counts reduced to a median, and cover anime only (characters excluded). Figures shift slightly as the data is refreshed.
