If you've narrowed the answer down to "romance," you're halfway there. This page is about the other half — and it uses measurement, not intuition. Every number below comes from measuring all 132 Romance-tagged titles in the 800-title answer pool against each other, with franchise pairs (sequels, films in the same series) excluded throughout.
1. Romance is one of the tightest genres in this game
Good news first: romance is a favorable genre, because guessing near it produces a signal. Three separate measures agree.

That last row matters most in play. For 94 of the 132 romance titles, the single closest neighbor was also a romance. Chance would predict 16%, so that's 4.4×. Once you have a romance signal, staying in the neighborhood is statistically the right move — switching directions repeatedly costs you.
2. But density splits in two inside the genre
Here's the core finding. Within romance, some titles have neighbors sitting at 0.85, while others top out at 0.65. Put the top-rated three side by side and the split is unmistakable.

All ten of its top neighbors are romance, and even the tenth sits at 0.771. School rom-coms recognize each other densely.

Same genre tag, but its best neighbor is 0.651 — lower than Kaguya-sama's tenth (0.771). Only 7 of its top 10 are romance, and three Boys Love titles slot in. Drama-heavy romance doesn't cluster with romance; it gets absorbed into the broader "serious drama" mass.
This isn't a quirk of two titles. Splitting all 132 by whether they carry the
School theme reproduces it.

For reference, the tags most often riding along with Romance are Drama (55%), School (45%) and Comedy (40%). Romance is effectively built from a school-comedy axis and a drama axis, and the numbers above say those two axes have different densities.
3. The "looks like romance, isn't tagged romance" trap
This is where players commonly trip. Kimi no Na wa. does not
carry a Romance tag at all — its tags are Award Winning / Drama. Its
neighbors run toward feature films, not romance.

So measuring romance from Kimi no Na wa. gives a misleading answer. Clannad reads 0.539 and Toradora! 0.562 from there — but that doesn't mean school romances are far from each other. It means cinematic drama is far from school romance. Among themselves, school romances sit at 0.77~0.85, as shown above.
An earlier version of this page anchored on Kimi no Na wa. and claimed that "0.55~0.65 means a TV school romance." Measuring all 132 titles showed that band is not a marker of a cluster — it is distance from one particular title. That claim was removed and the page rewritten from full-pool data on 2026-08-09.
4. Where a shared tag guarantees nothing
The far end is worth knowing too. These pairs both carry the Romance tag and are as distant as the genre gets (franchise pairs excluded).

A 0.2 is effectively "unrelated." Even when you're sure of the romance tag, romance carrying another strong axis — period drama, sci-fi, sports — lives somewhere else entirely.
5. In romance, characters almost always win
For all three anchors, the best own-cast character scored higher than the closest other title.

The gap widens exactly where neighbors are far — the drama-side romances. Clannad caps at 0.651 through titles but reaches 0.737 through a character. If your title scores stall around 0.65, that's not a wrong direction; it's the signal to start entering character names.
6. Playbook
Step 1. Got a romance signal? Keep digging there. The nearest neighbor shares the tag 71% of the time against a 16% baseline.
Step 2. Above 0.77 means the school axis. School rom-coms sit at 0.77~0.85 with each other. Work along that axis — Horimiya, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu and their neighbors.
Step 3. Stuck at 0.60~0.70? That's the drama axis. It doesn't mean you're wrong. Drama-side romance has a natural neighbor ceiling near 0.65. Stay in romance, but move toward titles of comparable emotional weight.
Step 4. Hitting a 0.65 ceiling? Confirm with characters. Per the table above, characters run 0.06~0.14 higher than titles. A lead character's name carries more information than one more title guess.
Step 5. Below 0.3 means a different axis inside romance. Period, sci-fi or sports romance can sit 0.2-something from school romance. Chase that other axis, not the tag.

Measurement basis — 800-title answer pool, collected 2026-08-05. Similarity is cosine similarity over embeddings of the title descriptions; all same-franchise pairs (sequels, films) are excluded. Values shift slightly whenever the dataset is refreshed.
